Staying inspired, engaged, and empowered is essential
We hear from so many of you, working professionals—
You’re good at your job, you like your company and your coworkers, you enjoy your work. But you’re looking for more.
You’re intellectually curious. You’re engaged and interested. You’re seeking, inquisitive, always learning—or trying to. You want to be exposed to new ideas, to stay fresh and prepared for the unexpected.
Or maybe you’re stuck. Really stuck and you’re not sure how to get ‘un-stuck’.
You've tried a lot of things, but you're still in need of something more.
If you can identify with any of the statements above, I’d like to talk about a practice you may not have considered, which might be able to help: the practice of serendipity.
Contrary to popular belief, serendipity isn’t luck, chance, or coincidence. Serendipity occurs when an individual, who is actively or passively seeking, encounters the unexpected, unanticipated, or new, makes a novel connection, and takes action to pursue it. As a result of their pursuit, new value is created.
You’ve seen examples of this in the stories we’ve shared—from the Rolling Suitcase to DNA, the Apple I Computer to outdoor gear brand Cotopaxi, and everything in between.
Creating a practice
But, how? How does one ‘practice’ serendipity?
In short, it’s about putting yourself in a position to encounter the new, the unexpected, even the familiar in a new way, combine it with what you already know, have experienced, or might dream, and then pursue it towards a positive outcome.
Your mindsets and behaviors create a flywheel that allows for the opportunity to experience and “see” serendipity—and then act on it when it occurs:
Does that seem too easy or too obvious? Sometimes the most significant change can come from the small things. (Check out this example of the impact of mindsets and behaviors on possibility and opportunity, in our 5£ Experiment story, if you’d like to dig into this further.)
